MAGPIES KEEN TO GET BACK INTO THE WINNERS CIRCLE
The Magpies have lost their last four games and this Sunday's game at Pizzey Park against bottom of the leader team, Burleigh Bears, gives the team a good opportunity to run in some form and get back into the winner's circle again.
The Burleigh Bears will be hosting their annual "Pink Day” in aid of breast cancer research. All of the Bears players will show their support for the cause by wearing pink jerseys and profits from the event will go towards the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Despite their positions on the competition ladder this will be this Sunday's TV game starting at 2.10pm. Both the Magpies and Bears have shown glimpses of what they are capable of at certain times this season. The Magpies have a better attacking record but the Bears have a better defensive record this season. Coach Mark Beaumont will, no doubt, be focusing the team on reducing the defensive lapses that have led to some big scores posted against the team.
Historically, the Burleigh Bears hold a 17-9 (with two drawn games) advantage over the Magpies – but recent history has the Magpies winning seven of the past eight games. Another statistic going in favour of the visiting side is the fact the Bears have not managed to beat the Magpies at Pizzey Park since 2007. Burleigh will NRL-experienced players like Steve Michaels, Jordan Rankin and Brenton Lawrence in the team so they will be a challenging team to beat. The team will still be without captain, Phil Dennis, but will be keen to extend their winning run over the Bears.

SOUTHS BEATEN BY WYNNUM AFTER LEADING FOR MUCH OF THE GAME
Souths-Logan lost to Wynnum-Manly 36-20 at Kougari Oval after leading the Seagulls for much of the game before Wynnum-Manly pulled away in the back end of the second half.
Wynnum posted the first try in the 19th minute to lead 6-0. It didn’t take long for the Magpies to hit back, when awarded a scrum only 10 metres out following a Wynnum mistake. Lock Rez Phillips showed great strength as he carried four defenders to the line in the 25th minute. Ben Cronin converted the try locking the score at 6-all. Nick Doyle capitalised on a poor misread from a Seagulls debutant pouncing on a wobbly grubber just before it crossed the dead ball line giving the Magpies a 10-6 lead. Five minutes before half time Ben Cronin kicked a huge 40/20 and the opportunity wasn't wasted as second rower Darcy Wright beat two Seagulls to score in front of the Chook Pen. Ben Cronin’s conversion gave the Magpies a lead of 10 points with the score at 16-6 and a genuine upset was on the cards having scored 3 tries to 1. Wynnum hit back just before half time with a try and the score was 16-10 as they went to the sheds.
The second half was a different story as Wynnum scored 5 tries to 1. Wynnum's back line clicked into gear and the Magpies defence was found wanting out wide at times as the ball was shifted out wide by Wynnum.
Coach Mark Beaumont would, no doubt, be concerned about the defensive lapses that allowed the Seagulls to run in 36 points for the game. He would, though, be pleased with the spirited effort that they showed in attack which hopefully will continue to improve as the season goes on.
Souths-Logan have two road trips down to the Gold Coast over the next couple of weeks. The first will be against Burleigh who are last on the ladder who have a better defensive record than the Magpies but have scored the least number of points in the competition. It will be next Sunday's TV game. Following that is an away game against last year's minor premiers, Tweed Heads, who are fourth on the ladder at the moment.
WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS 36 (Charlie Gubb 2, Nathanael Barnes, Kurt Capewell, Dan Wallace, Jason Moon, John Te Reo tries; Matt Seamark 4 goals) defeated
SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES 20 (Darcy Wright 2, Nick Doyle, Rez Phillips tries; Ben Cronin 2 goals) at BMD Kougari Oval.
